Eamonn Fitzgerald

Our tour of Euroblogs worth reading brings us to Eamonn Fitzgerald in Munich, who reports from Rumsfeld's visit to Munich.
Looking today at such signs today in Munich, I was struck by the sheer absurdity of the pro-Saddam apologists. They are cut from the very same cloth as those who felt it was better for the Afghans to live in the Middle Ages under the Taliban than to free them with firepower. Confronted now with the possibility of ridding the world of a tyrant, they opt for further enslavement of his subjects. Deranged, depraved and demented, indeed.

The one thing that is being forgotten/disregarded in the anti-war camp is the non-Baathist Iraqi population. Several binding UN resolutions threaten "consequences" (serious or otherwise) to Saddam and his Baathist co-horts if they continue to terrorize their own people. If, as has occurred in the past, no consequences are forthcoming from continued terror being visited upon these people, the terrible acts will continue.

The apologists should (but won't) take to heart a quote from Trotsky (possibly apocryphal): "You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you."

Thanks for that insightful comment! It makes interesting reading, especially when I need a cash advance.
