A Farewell to Ev's

I've switched the blog from Blogger to Movable Type. Being a techie, I can only assume that everyone else is as interested in the technical details of changing ones blog software as I am. So I wrote a 4000 word account of how I toiled and sweated for days to get this up and working. It's a story full of high expectations and crushed hopes, anger, joy, and discussions of the inner workings of the <$MTEntryTrackbackData$> tag.

Unfortunately, my dog ate it.

So here's the deal: Click around, and if something looks weird, (and you think it shouldn't), let me know.

I won't touch the old archives, but I've copied the posts for February, and I'll shortly be adding all the comments as well.

Oh, and I've made a side-blog for quick links, no-comments and one-liners.

Off -topic: There's a red alert for a terrorist attack in the city today. Please wish us luck.

I stopped noticing these alerts long ago, but I suppose there's every reason to feel differently in New York. Good luck.

crl: Where did you hear red? I tuned in, and it's still orange.

Red is when there's specific knowledge of an impending strike, i.e. the planes are in the air, the bomb is in transport. Subways and airports would be closed. That hasn't happened yet here in NY.

Orange is specific knowledge of intent to strike in the near future, i.e. intercepted messages prepping a strike. That has happened.

Oh geez! I live in a big, drafty loft. I guess I should get some duct tape and plastic sheets. Could help bring down the heating bill. But from what I hear, there's been a run on them at the hardware stores...

Regarding what the terrorists are actually going to be capable of read this bit of common-sense again (it's been around the internet of course for well over a year and everybody's read it, I know, but I read it again and learned again what I'd forgotten. It's worth reading again...)

Welcome to the club, Bjørn. Looks great!

Well, I must say you've done an impressive job. One can barely tell a difference. Everything looks great.

We had an expert in bioterror in for a discussion/QandA session at the magazine where I work -- one of the city's top officials. He told us that the orange alert had been raised to a tentative red (but that they weren't publicizing). I can't speak to the accuracy of that -- after all, I'm still here and breathing, knock wood.

At any rate, they sent us home early, and most of the staff took Friday off. Those of us who live in the outer boroughs took in Manhattanites over the weekend, and so on. Of course, in retrospect, I feel slightly silly now, panicking, but at least I wasn't alone. :-) I'm grateful for the snowstorm -- crimes of every stripe are less likely in crappy weather...
