After the murder of Mr. van Gogh, whose accused killer belonged to a radical Muslim network, Dutch newspapers were filled with long articles that sounded like Mr. Fortuyn. Jihad has reached the Netherlands, one commentator wrote. Another asked: Has the Netherlands become a country in which you can no longer say what you want, or does the taboo apply only to Islam? (This is a nation, after all, to which people fled centuries ago to speak and write freely.)

Not since 9/11 have I seen any country's news media outlets so preoccupied with a single topic. The Netherlands is undergoing a sea change.

I'll go there in January and see for myself. Anyway, my real question here: Has anyone read Bawers book on Christian fundamentalist?

No, but i should propably buy it. He's a capable writer and a pretty smart guy.

The Dutch and all of Europe had better develop a real intolerance for intolerance, not the PC version that excuses all non-Western cultures from criticism, and make it clear that free speech is for all people, all the time, in all circumstances. The fact is that Islam is basically contrary to the ideals of equality and human rights. Read the Quran - it is very clear that non-muslims and women, and other groups are to be second class citizens at best (or dead is alright too).

It is a fact that where Islam dominates, other religions, women, gays, jews, etc are oppressed and discriminated against. Muslims don't want to hear this, they prefer the PC version 'Islam means peace" that Western leaders have been feeding to the foolish public.

Holland and the rest of Europe had better deal with this now, because it will only get worse. I am very pessimistic about the ability of Muslims to accept Western ideals and still be honest Muslims. A look at Islamic sites, or many public forums, shows that there are mostly only two kinds of Muslims: those that will kill you themselves (the so-called fundamentalists) and the ones that will let other Muslims kill you and then make excuses (the so-called moderates). The West had better do something - else the future will mean no freedoms, no rights, no pensions - only misery, pain and death.

To John Edwards: yo're quite correct in your assessment.

Lately some pundits have been thrilled by the sight of Muslims demonstrating in the Steets of Germany to denounce violence.....or at least that's the way media portray it.

However, when you look at photos of these events you soon realise that it isn't a demonsration to denounce islamic atrocities at all, but rather big propaganda marches designed to confuse and decieve.

As for the events in Cologne, recently, as soon as I saw participants sporting signs reading "Islam means peace" I had a good idea as to just what these "denouncers" were actually up to; yet another whitewash

The next time such events are held Europeans should line the streets and boulevards in total silence........holding up placards with simple questions such as "Why does Islam repress women" or "why do so many Koranic passage incite violence" or "why does Islam practise honor killings" etc, etc.

I can guarantee you that in less than five minutes the whole thing would degenerate into an all-out knock-down drag-out brawl.

Stealing Jesus - great book..christian rightwingers/fundamentalists are the flip-side of the same coin with the islamists on the other side. Both are for religious bigotry, intolerance ,misogyny and religious hegemony.Bawer lauds liberal christianity as the essence of the Gospel...the kind of religion that Jesus would recognize and practise because he preached it.

Bald face-lying and bare-face denial are part and parcel of the islamic strategy in engaging infidels. Recall how 'ex-christian' one of the posters challenged a writer to show proof of execution of muslim apostate . Here you find an example of bare-face denial in view of the overwhelming evidence and historical records of persecution and liquidation of apostates.
