Luttwak does not believe Islam is the enemy

Norwegian media quoted Edward Luttwak recently as having said in Narvik that "Islam is the enemy" - a disturbing view, coming from a security and foreign policy advisor in Washington. Except he doesn't believe that, as Jan Arild Snoen reports.

... "Islam is the enemy" - a disturbing view ...

I would rather say that it would have been refreshing if someone finally had the courage to present this view. The fact that it could be true is of course disturbing, but that should not prevent anyone from saying it.

I find it very odd when people say that Islam cannot be the enemy because most Muslims are not our enemies and only the Islamists (or extremists) are. I don't see how this shows how Islam is not the enemy, as those Islamic extremists are our enemies simply because they follow Islam (and no, they don't distort or hijack Islam as a lot of naive apologists claim). The so-called moderate Muslims are not our enemies simply because they follow Islam to a lesser degree and not because they follow a moderate and peaceful version of Islam. If these moderate Muslims somehow found the motivation to follow Islam to a greater degree, then they would become our enemies too.

Roger,

You hit the nail on the head. However there are those who opine that moderate islam is even more deadly or just as deadly as extremist islam:
