Astrid Meland on genital mutilation
One reason why Dagbladet is a better newspaper online than in print: reporters like Astrid Meland.

I cannot but agree, and wish this piece was translated to english, for the benefit of your readers. A very un-Dagbladet piece. Harald, Oslo | 2005-08-30 00:42 | Link Astrid Meland is indeed one of Dagbladets most interesting reporters (or should I say, it's ONLY interesting reporter). She seems to be able to think for her self, and doesn't just follow the regular patterns. And i don't say that from this article. She has impressed me many times before. Cheers! Jan Haugland, Bergen | 2005-08-30 13:37 | Link Very true. It is interesting to compare it to this article about an SV-politician marrying a Masai. The SV politician makes some atrocious comments defending female genital mutilation. Someone | 2005-09-01 01:19 | Link Hmmm... so what could be the reason why Dagbladet didn't publish this in their printed edition? I cannot imagine it's only because of space constraints?! Jan Haugland, Bergen | 2005-09-01 16:44 | Link Dagbladet has actually published quite a bit on female genital mutilation on paper lately, but I am not sure if that particular article made it. Typically, articles come to web first, often quite a bit earlier. Ragnar Olsen | 2005-12-01 05:51 | Link I believe it is stupid to discuss Astrid Meland in English. Why? Because she write her articles in Norwegian. Everyone with a opinion about Astrid Meland would therefore be able to discuss this issue in Norwegian. Jon, Kairo | 2005-12-02 11:05 | Link I will continue in English, since this started in that language: Today's article (Dec 2, 2005) on aid is excellent and balanced. It is refreshing to see that in a country where aid has become something of a holy cow, and to criticize it h as been equivalent to supporting right-wing libertarians in the US. Something may actually be at least partly right even though we do not a´ways like those who said it first. I also want to mention the recent article on the fate of the Udine people in Azerbaijan. That shows a journalist willing to see people in the eyes and listen respectfully but without naïvete, at the same time seeing reality without cynicism. It also shows someone willing to overstep the boundaries of her paper's editorial traditions when relevant -- such as actually saying something positive (or at least not negative) about mission (!) in that article. Wonderful, all of it. Thank you! Trackback
